Immigrants come to the United States in hopes of finding a better future. So, when they finally get their Green Card, it is a day of celebration. However, immigrants in Louisville and nationwide should know that with a Green Card comes certain rights and responsibilities.
A Green Card bestows a person with U.S. permanent residency. As a permanent resident of the United States, a person has certain rights. They can live permanently in the country, as long as they do not do anything that is a deportable offense under immigration law. As a permanent resident of the United States, they may be able to perform any type of legal work in the nation that they choose and are qualified for. However, for security reasons, there are certain occupations that require a person to be a U.S. citizen, not just a permanent resident. Finally, as a permanent resident of the United States, a person is afforded the protection of all U.S. laws and the laws of the state in which they reside.
However, as a permanent resident of the United States, a person has certain responsibilities as well. A person must not break either federal, state or local laws. A person must also file an annual income tax return with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, as well as filing any necessary state income tax returns. Permanent residents of the United States are expected to uphold democracy and cannot illegally try to change the government. Finally, male permanent residents of the United States ages 18 to 25 must register for the Selective Service.
As this shows, Green Card holders are afforded many important rights, but they have important responsibilities as well. Those who are seeking U.S. permanent residency may want to make sure they understand what is expected of them once they obtain a Green Card.
