Getting A Green Card

The formal term is lawful permanent residence (LPR). But in practice, the immigration status that allows a foreign national to live — and also work — permanently in the U.S. is widely known as a green card.

At the Law Office of Dennis M. Clare, PSC, we have decades of experience helping people obtain this coveted status. Our skilled attorneys can explain your eligibility for a green card and help you take steps aimed at getting one.

What Does A Green Card Allow You To Do?

A green card allows you to have permanent residency in the U.S. That is huge.

To be sure, there are some limitations. You don’t get to vote. And you are still subject to possible deportation or removal (such as for the commission of an aggravated felony).

In addition, living outside the U.S. for more than six months is not allowed if you want to keep your card. You will also need to renew it every 10 years.

But if you have a green card, it opens up the ability to apply for naturalization and citizenship. If you are married to a U.S. citizen, you can do this within three years, rather than waiting the full five that would otherwise be required.
